In 2009, VCS embarked on a journey to fully define the division's principles and purposes and to create a shared vision for high performance. Through the identification of its "Three Pillars," of stewardship, business leadership and organizational development, VCS created a foundation to guide its people's continuous improvement within the organization and more broadly at Walgreens. While the Three Pillars provide a solid foundation, how they would be brought to life was later clarified through the Three Laws of Performance Program.
In July 2009, Value Creation's leadership participated in a powerful three-day off-site program called the "The Three Laws of Performance." The "Three Laws" focus on future-based language that accelerates increases in personal and organizational performance by creating an environment in which individual ideas and
concerns are valued and shared. The laws focus on what is possible in the future, instead of focusing on individual differences of perspective rooted in the past. At the program's end, the VCS leadership team determined that for the Three Pillars to truly become part of the culture, it was essential that leadership be aligned behind a shared "Declaration of Excellence" and chart a course for sharing this powerful and forward-thinking program throughout VCS. As the program concluded, the leaders who crafted the Declaration of Excellence committed to living and breathing it.
The Declaration addresses Value Creation Services' role as a catalyst in transforming the company, creating value for all stakeholders, developing its people, and delivering exceptional business results. The Declaration's tenets and commitments create a roadmap to bring the Three Pillars to life withinVCS.
The Blueprints program was born from the Declaration's third tenet, which states:
"We commit to establishing an environment for effective communication and collaboration, the development of our people, and innovation."
In September 2009, Blueprints, originally known as the Career Model, held its first meeting where more than 100 VCS members volunteered their time and services to create a program designed "for the people, by the people." The program's purpose is to implement services and resources to attract, develop and retain VCS' most important asset – its people.
